Red, Blue and Round Pastel Sketch

You are not going to believe that I actually painted, well, sketched on a "new" piece of paper without an under painting.  Gene went to bed a little early and I decided to use the quiet time to play in the dust.  It felt good to get my hands dirty.

I had been working on the gifts to send to Kentucky.  I make gift tags with photos on them so the little kids can hand out the presents without having to read who they are for.  My printer has a dirty roller or something making lines down the paper. I spent an hour or more cleaning with no success.  I need to get them in the mail so I just went ahead and printed them.  They will be tossed soon after opening anyway.

So I decided to procrastinate and paint instead of wrapping packages.  Sigh.....

Red, Blue and Round
Pastel on Lux Archival Paper
8 x 10 inches

I really like the sanded paper.  It lies flat and takes an under painting water or alcohol.  I didn't use one tonight.  I didn't want to wait for it to dry.

Here is the setup:

Jo this is gorgeous...the blues appear so vibrant. It seems like pastels are so much richer than watercolors. Do you sometimes do an underpainting with watercolors for your pastel paintings? You are inspiring me to get mine out...probably should put that on my of New Year's goals. I am procrastinating on that package wrapping as well. Glad you are getting out your ornaments - bet you have some special ones. Have a great day - Hugs!

Debbie, thank you. Yes I feel pastels are so much more vibrant and instant which I like. I usually do an under painting either with hard pastels and water or alcohol (depending on the surface) or with watercolors. I tried acrylic and acrylic ink but I am too heavy handed I think and fill the tooth. Richard McKinley has lots of hints about under paintings which you can probably find on YouTube using complementary colors or the same color.

Joan, thank you so much. It is a good thing to play in the dust. Gene thought I had fallen asleep watching TV. Ha.
