Did I Learn from the Experiment

I wonder if I learned anything by copying the style of Ans Debije.

If I didn't learn anything, I at least got in two practice sketches for the Hunts and paintings for Enid's class.  I won't be there on Monday.  We will have company.  She will see my blog post.  You can see her beautiful work in Austin and other venues.  Right now at a couple of shows

First I tried to do a painting in Debije's style.  She uses minimum strokes with a wide brush.  Very vibrant colors with high contrast between light and dark.  Her backgrounds are usually light in value.  The artist makes most items look shiny.

I like this.  I should have put more dark shapes on the vase to make it "shine" more.  Maybe on the pear as well, yes, that is a pear.  I would prefer the corners to be different.  I tried to use the wide strokes as much as possible.  It looks like I covered them up as I went along.

Number 1, dandelions

Number 4, red - spoon rest
Number 5, noodle strainer - colander

This sketch is on the same Pastelbord, wiped off and went again with an assortment of pastels.

I was trying to incorporate some of Ans wide strokes and contrasts to be shiny.  The background is her style - maybe.  The rest is pretty much the same old way I work. I don't blend much with my fingers.  I blend with another harder pastel stick or just use a light touch with my finger or a paper towel.

I worked on it about an hour and a half.  I let it sit last night and remembered I didn't put in the dandelions.  I left them to last as they would have withered away.  We have plenty of dandelions in the yard.  They look pretty with their happy yellow faces.
