Watercolor Mania

Watercolor Mania .. That sounds exciting and different doesn't it?  I was going to call the post "Watercolor Fun", but I'm wondering when watercolor will be fun for me.  Watercolor painting is "real" homework for me.   Practice, practice, practice!  I know!

I took the photo of the willow blooms the other day, remember?  I also bought the pink watercolor.  The result is a practice painting from this photo.

This is on Master's Tourch watercolor paper, 9 x 12 inches, with the Opera pink and various watercolors.  I'm fairly pleased with it.  It is way overworked but I learned a few things.  The watercolors I used dry about half as dark as I painted them.  I really worked on the dark and it shows.

Today I did another watercolor for the Scavenger Hunt from Life

I sketched lightly in pencil.  This is looking out the window of my studio from my desk.  Again the color is not as intense as I thought it would be.  This is on the back of the flowers.  I may work on it again.

This sign is on the road near Magdalena, New Mexico, where you turn to Water Canyon.  Growing up we never knew that we lived on a fault line.  We never felt an earthquake!  They put up this sign after we were out of school some sixty years ago.  Oh, my.  Anyway, a few years back we were talking with Gene Mear and geologist friend of ours.  He said something to Gene about what did we think about the fault line in Magdalena.  "What fault line?" we asked.  Mr. Mear went on to explain and we were very surprised that he knew more than we did about our home town.

Water Canyon
Pastel, 10 x 16 inces

I painted this from a spot close to the Magdalena Fault sign.  Little did we know that before we knew Mr. Mear, there was a fault line near us researched and well known to geologists.  I'll have to look, now that I'm remembering this to see if I have a photo that shows the line.

I find that some watercolor paper results in lighter colors than others. I like your flowers. How did you like opera rose? I remember using it quite a while back. I liked the brightness of it but stopped using it for some reason.

Joan, thank you so much. Now that you mention it, the Arches paper seems to hold on to the color better. The Opera Rose is definitely more "pink" than what I was using. It is probably good for my experiments!
