Hollyhocks Welcome Pastel

Well, my blog is still here.  Thank you, Blogger!

I sat in on Enid Wood's (https://www.enidwood.com/)pastel class on Monday.  She is so encouraging and had us paint quickly.  That might just jump start my painting muse.  We have about 30 minutes of the class to paint on our own.

I had started a painting of a blue gate, hollyhocks and trees from New Mexico a while back.  The photo was probably near Taos.  I decided to just wipe off the Pastelbord and start over.  I brushed off the pastel and wet it a bit to have a mottled under painting.  I then focused in on the flowers and I am pleased with the composition now and the mood of the scene.

I didn't get much done in the thirty minutes as the board had to dry before putting on more pastel.  I did work on it later for an hour or hour and a half.  I like the background and shadows.   The pastels just flow when an artist is in the zone!

Hollyhocks, adobe and blue doors are so New Mexico.  My grandmother on my Mom's side and my Aunt Mae always had Hollyhocks growing as a welcome to their homes.  I have always loved the flowers.  I think pastel softens them, the leaves are actually a bit prickly and rough.

Do you like Hollyhocks?  Have you seen them in New Mexico?  I hope so.

René, You are correct. Fun name for the hollies. I was using the shadow left for underpainting. I do have some blooms in mind. Thanks for the suggestion.

I remember seeing hollyhocks a lot in New Mexico when we were there. They are a fun flower to paint. I like how you did this one!!

I love the hollyhocks, my favorite flower - so New Mexico. I am in RR right now and the flowers are beautiful. I'll take lots of pictures.

bag blog, oh, I'm so jealous. We haven't been to Angel Fire and Red River since 2019. I miss it a lot. Thanks, hope you get to paint a lot.
