Pastel Sketching and Ink Sketching

First we had pastel class on Monday.  Enid talked and demonstrated about Chroma and how our softest pastels have the highest chroma and punch.  We had 30 minutes to paint.  I set up a still life with a blue bottle, clementines in a copper pot and a little black box.  I didn't put my sketch on the paper before class and ran out of room for the box and out of time as well.  I had sketching for Scavenger Hunt 700 on my mind, too.  Bottle and fruit was on the Hunt list.

For Scavenger Hunt 700, Number 9 bottle and Number 10 fruit.  Assorted pastels, 9 x 12 inches.

Pastel on a new MiTeintes paper.  I ordered some paper from Dick Blick.  I like the Canson MiTeintes as it comes in all colors.  It is good for pastels on the "wrong" side which is smoother than the gridded front side.  They had some paper, same brand, that was cheaper.  I ordered a couple of pieces to try it.  When I put it away I took the stickers off and just pulled out this sand colored paper to work on.  A grayed background to make the colors stand out.  The new paper is lighter weight and feels slick even though it is gridded.  You can see the pastel went into the squares and blurred the edges.  Not always bad but it didn't hold as many layers either.  I will use these few pieces only for sketching.  I think the power of the soft pastels is evident.

The week before we were working with lines if you recall.  We painted with lines or hatching.  I did this small sketch of a bluebonnet with vertical lines.  It is about 3 x 7 inches.  This can't be in the Scavenger Hunts because I did not sketch from life, a real flower.

Bluebonnet with blue lines on green Colourfix sanded paper.  Pastel pencils.

I sketched for Scavenger Hunt 700.  It is the last Scavenger Hunt on wetcanvas.  Wetcanvas is going away sometime after the first of the year, but artists are abandoning at a fast clip.  I think everyone is tired of the big company's changes.  This will be the third big change and will cut down on education posts and want the artists to subscribe to their videos and classes.  So we are moving to creativespark.art starting with Scavenger Hunts from Life Number 1 in the Art from Life forum.

So for Scavenger Hunt 700 the bottle and clementines above.

Also...

Number 11, cup - a cup Jennie gave me for traveling.  I don't like drinking coffee from plastic or metal.  I have sketched the cup many times, but wanted to sketch it for the last sketch of the Scavenger Hunts on wetcanvas.  Kinda sad.  Luckily we are all moving together to creativespark.art

I'm still in the Southwest forum to the end of November but will leave that at the end of the month.  I'm hosting the Challenge.  I posted in the pastel forum as well, so the end of the month is by-by wetcanvas.

For Scavenger Hunts from Life on creativespark.art Hunt #1 I am hosting starting tomorrow.  I did a sketch tonight as a sample for the newcomers.

Number 1 blue - the little blue pot from Chile
Number 2 sea shell - the only two little shells I have
Number 3 your hand holding one of the items

These are in the big book with a Micron 02 pen.  The first sketch for Hunt #1.

 Yay....

i dont think i've actually ever used that paper for pastels, just coloured pencil on the smoother side since like you said it comes in so many colours it helps with the shading

I've always liked the paper. It doesn't hold as much pastel as sanded paper but is great for sketches. The new paper is thinner/lighter weight and sort of slick or something. That is the way Strathmore pastel paper feels to me. Very hard to cover the grid, especially without blending with your finger or...... Nice to see you.
