The September Challenge is up in the Southwest forum on wetcanvas. We paint from one of the other artist's photos. Because I'm not fond of painting from photos, I decided to do a quick hour sky painting. Pretending like I was outside painting plein air and had to finish before the light changed too much. Ta-da, a faux plein air painting.
Pastel on Pastelbord, 10 x 8 inches
I used a Pastelbord that I had painted on before. I wiped it off and then added some dark in the upper left and middle and red in the foreground. I wet that and brushed it around. When dry I painted for about an hour. I'm pleased with the result.
I took a photo in the living room to check how dark the painting is. Larry gave me a new LED light for my studio. It is very bright, like painting outdoors. When you paint outside, it is easy to work too dark. I'm pleased with this result.
The old light has more shadows on the door and in the corners. Again the camera made the shadows lighter in the closet and table. Interesting.

Nicely done!!! How strange that you tend to paint darker outside. I find I do the opposite. Maybe it is my eyesight (which definitely needs to be checked). I'm afraid left eye has developed a cataract. :(
Jo your sky painting is lovely and definitely has the look as though you were outside painting. I do the same thing when I wasn't able to get out and paint, just put a time limit just like when painting plein air. Great job. I'm glad everyone is safe after that terrible storm. Take care.
Joan, thanks so much. Sorry about your eye. I had implants back in the early 90s so have been fine. I think they can even put in bifocals now, I had to have only one focus so I chose far and use readers for reading and typing. Having it taken care of was nerve wracking but so much easier now.
Thank you jsicgignano, another Joan, right? It felt good to finish a painting. My son immediately saw a face in the clouds and then I saw more. Once you see that you don't see the painting so will have to touch up the clouds, ha. Happy with a painting anyway.
Someone recently asked me to do a landscape for them. Most of it was sky. Very pretty, but difficult for me. She seems to think that I could do it in watercolor. ha!
I like your sky. A few years ago, I took several photos of old homesteads around here with lots of sky and clouds. Maybe I will get around to painting more of them.
Bag Blog, you should do some landscapes and clouds. They are fun. I do think it is easy to get faces in clouds and rocks. Watercolor clouds can be beautiful.
