I try to publish new paintings in my newsletter first. This one I started as a sketch for Scavenger Hunt 665, item - apple. I had fun with it so kept on and turned the sketch into a painting.
I'm gathering names for the painting. My first thought was "Group Hug" but my kids and a friend said it looked like the middle apple was being picked on. What do you think? One of these or a different name entirely:
- Group Hug
- You're Surrounded
- Bully Apples
- or?
Number 1, Apple - pastel on Colourfix Sanded Paper, 12 x 9 inches
The idea came from a challenge on Carol Marine's Blog. I've known Carol for a long time via internet and blogging. She lived in Austin, moved to Bastrop, had her home burned, too, moved to Oregon and now lives in Montana. She is an amazing daily painter and teacher. Her book about daily painting is so good and inspirational. I don't think she is doing workshops anymore, but is generous with her help and has videos on her Paintworks page, some cost a few dollars and some are free.
Carol's husband started a website to sell and auction her paintings and it turned into a site for other artists called Daily Paintworks. They send out a daily e-mail with new paintings by all artists and offer the sales tools and websites for $12.95 a month. One month free if you pay for a year. It is a really good deal and site, easy to work. You can connect your blog and newsletter as well. You can have inventory and sales charts, etc. I was one of the first, but decided to go with a traditional website as I wasn't painting daily and wanted some other features. They upgraded and have most of those features now. No increase in fees in 10 years and new stuff and help daily. I probably should do both!
Carol uses apples as her fall back subject when she is "stuck". We have that in common. She posted the challenge to paint apples with the lighting not falling on all the apples in the same way but getting the colors to read the same. I couldn't resist. Challenge here: https://carolmarine.blogspot.com/2021/01/jumping-off.html
You could do the challenge as well. It doesn't have to be apples. Let me know if you take on the challenge.

The apple are great and you did great on the lighting. One of the younger artists at CTAC takes art lessons from some artist in OKC. She is doing a painting a day challenge for 6 months. So far she is liking it.
Bag Blog, thank you. A painting a day can be good practice. In a way I think it is good to paint smaller, not tiny, for practice. You see a completed painting and figure out problems. Painting a long time on one big painting doesn't seem to teach as much to me.
You make a good point about smaller paintings. They are easier to carry too - ha! Actually, I rarely paint big. But sometimes I think I get too tight when I paint small. I need to loosen up with big brushes.
Bag Blog, it is important to make big paintings for that reason. Sometimes it is hard to turn a small idea to big. I really liked a sketch/painting I did with a woman walking on a sidewalk along a wall. It looked great in a small painting but when I tried to go big there was a huge blank space in the middle of the painting! And you can use big brushes, knives, etc.
Great job on the apples, Jo!!! And thanks for the plug. I'm glad you have water and power back. Ugh! What a catastrophe for Texas!!! You in particular have really been through the wringer. So happy to hear from you! : )
Carol, thank you so much. You always inspire. I think of you a lot for apples, daily painting, blogging, etc. Your Peaceful Peppers today is a good idea, to let a painting sit before you change or discard it. I love the palette on this one.
