News Release:
Be on the lookout for easels and brushes the weekend of April 18-20, 2019. The Outdoor Painters Society will be three Texas towns (LaGrange, Smithville, and Bastrop) for an “en plein air” event. “En Plein Air” is French and, artistically, means painting in the open air.
Artists will set up on Thursday morning in the LaGrange town square. Art Connections Gallery, 123 N. Main St. in LaGrange is hosting a reception for the artists at 5-6:30 pm.
On Friday OPS artists will visit Smithville; painting at the 9E Ranch, courtesy of Joan and Kent Bohls, and in the town of Smithville. And, on Saturday, artist paint in the town of Bastrop and along the Colorado River.
The artists end the event on Saturday and meet at the Lost Pines Art Center, 1204 Chestnut Street, in Bastrop. The Lost Pines Art Center is hosting a “wet painting” show and sale from 5:30-7:30 pm. A portion of the sales benefits the Lost Pines Art Center. The reception and show are open to the public. Stop by and meet professional artists.
Local artists are invited to participate in the paint out event. To register, contact irmaward99@gmail.com.
About OPS
OPS was formed by a group of ten artists in 1996. It achieved 401c3 non-for-profit 2011. The mission was to create opportunities and incentive for artists of like mind to come together and paint en plein air, as the Impressionists painters did in the 19th century. The current plein air movement expanded and now the organization has grown to 400 strong. Most OPS members reside in Texas, yet membership is represented all across the U.S. and into Canada. President, Tina Bohlman, states "There is never any pressure from within the group - we welcome all skill levels, professionals and hobbyist. The group paint outs will help promote the arts within the community...but better than that, we make real friends that share common interests and the love of art. Plus, when we attend these events, we support the local businesses within the community. After all, we need places to eat and sleep."
According to Irma Ward, Director of Paint Outs, "OPS organizes 7-8 paint outs a year. Events are held all around the south and southwest, from Arkansas to the Grand Canyon.
OPS is host of Plein Air Southwest, a "members only" juried event that attracts national attention and is promoted in major art magazines. Plein Air Southwest has earned the reputation as one of the premier events of spring. In 2019, prize money will total $25,000. It showcases the incredible talent within OPS membership and serves to promote an appreciation for the process of painting “en plein air.” All works are completed outdoors on location, and are characterized by the bold use of color, design and the freshness of paint application.
This year’s event will be held in Galveston, TX May 5-12, 2019. In addition, OPS is host to several free paint out events for members, held throughout the South and Southwest. Events range from 1 to 7 days of painting. Members also enjoy demonstrations and discounts on workshops by nationally known artists. Its website and mailings include interesting blog postings, paint out itineraries, and the monthly newsletter, “Plein Talk.” For more information go to the OPS website: www.outdoorpainterssociety.com.
The OPS is open to all artists interested in painting outdoors, as well as collectors and supporters who want to stay close to the group. The OPS promote the tradition of plein air painting and provides opportunities for emerging artists to socialize and learn from professionals.
