Pastel Sketch and Plein Air Paint Out Coming to Bastrop

I did a pastel sketch for the Southwest Forum on wetcanvas.  The Monthly Challenge is drawing/painting from photos provided by artists.  You know I don't enjoy painting from photos and don't plan to save anything I paint from photos other than my own.

I wiped off my sanded paper which had a Scavenger Hunt sketch on it.  I put in about an hour on this.  It is sort of a plan to be ready for the paint out, see below.

The photo by falar is a scene in Monument Valley.

Plein Air painting is outside from life.  The light changes so quickly that artists rarely spend more  than a couple of hours on a painting.   They might come back again to finish another day but rarely continue.  It is hard to paint and not change the lighting as you go on your painting.  The changing light confuses all the shadows and light source.  I usually take a photo and then get started.  When the light starts changing I ignore the view and focus on the painting itself and refer to the photo for lighting.

Last year at the paint out in New Mexico I had a hard time focusing and remembering how to start and get something down quickly.  I sketch quickly but painting is about under painting, perspective, value, color, simplifying, etc.  Too many things to think about in a couple of hours.  I hope to be more ready this year, thus the quick painting pratice.....

Joan Bohls belongs to the Outdoor Painters Society.  They are coming to La Grange, Bastrop and Smithville April 18-20.  I plan to be there.  I joined the group in hopes of showing my paintings on the last evening at the Lost Pines Art Center.  For information and to join the Society or just register to paint, check the Outdoor Painters Society website.

They have many events all over the country.  Sounds like fun.  See you in April!  I'm using it for a warm up to the paint out in Questa/Red River in July.

Nice pastel!!! Good to hear that you are taking part in the plein air event. You still have a little time to practice before it takes place. Want me to come down and keep you company? lol I can't do that anyway...heading off to Venice next week. Shhhh...I haven't told my other blog buddies.

Hi, Joan. Yay, would be great to paint someplace with you. Venice sounds like a good place to do that! I can't make it there either. Shucks. Have a great time and look forward to your sketches and paintings.

I keep meaning to go paint up on the hill here, get a great view of the valley but I can't be bothered painting outside in the wind (gets really really windy around here lol)

Great pastel landscape, love the colours :)

Jennifer Rose, I can understand that! I don't paint in wind and prefer shade. I'm a sometimes painter it seems now.

I immediately thought of the Wild Rivers paint out when I saw your tree painting. I'm looking forward to the plein air this summer. What a workout!

Lou, that is a workout, thus the practice! Looking forward to painting with you. I will be more "with it" this year. Sue, painting buddy from Michigan, may come and Estela from The Valley. They are both fun to go out with. More energy than me!

Bag Blog, Lou, the WRP paint out will be great and like I said, I plan on being better mentally prepared especially for painting!
