Portraitist .. I'm Not

On the Southwest and Western Art Forum on wetcanvas there is a thread to post portraits of Notorious Wild West Outlaws.  I don't go for outlaws.  I sketched Pat Garrett and now am posting a pencil sketch of James Arness as Marshall Dillon.

Gunsmoke was on television for twenty years.  My folks loved Gunsmoke and also Bonanza.  James Arness died in 2011.

This is about 5 inches tall in a corner of a page in the big sketchbook.   I started it about 4 times and messed with it for about an hour.  It is from several photos on the image page from Google.  The first image showed him with his mouth open, not good.  Enough is enough.  Maybe you can see a resemblance when I tell you who it is supposed to be.

Added February 19, I am not posting to the thread anymore or linking to it.  I think perpitrators of violence are encouraged by fame.  I will not contribute, even though I sketched the good guys.

It does resemble him. Nice sketch of him!

Jennifer Rose, that is just sad, you are too young to know "Gunsmoke" on TV. Yikes. LOL

Joan, thanks. I always like Arness and his brother, Peter Graves that was in "Mission Impossible" on TV, too.

I think you did a pretty good job on James A. Recently, I did a portrait of a young lady I know. I got her photo from her FB page and did a pastel. Toby said, "One eye is bigger than the other." So I got out the photo again and showed him. Sure enough, one eye is bigger - it's the way her head is turned. It looks normal in the photo, but not so much on my painting.

Thanks, Bag Blog. Interesting about the eye in the photo and the paintings. I never understand how perspective is that way. One tiny line can change a whole face or building or whatever. I'm certainly glad that I am not a portraitist by profession, even with a camera. Ha.
