Tina Woodruff did a short encaustic demo. I had never thought of doing encaustic, but looks like fun and a bit dangerous, at least in my case. You paint with a combination of wax and oil paint and then heat it up with a blowtorch to get the wax to melt a bit and set the paint. It was interesting to see and WATCH. Why didn't I get a photo?? Tina has invited me to give a workshop at her studio in November, information to follow soon.
I painted with pastels and handed out information. I did an under painting with pastel and water on Colourfix paper. Then framed the painting and gave it as a door prize.
As usual, I did not take any photos. I swiped this one from the Lost Pines Artisans Alliance facebook page. Thanks, Cammy. The painting is not finished in this photo, but it is proof! Tina Broussard, sculptor, from Smithville won the door prize.
Scavenger Hunt 272 is almost over and I hadn’t sketched until this morning. Just lazy I suppose. Out on the porch while finishing up my coffee. I sketched in the regular old brown page sketchbook, Utrecht. I used a Prismacolor Premier 08 pen/marker. I sketched quickly, freehand and then added a bit of colored pencil.
Number 1, plant - the petunia on the porch. It is near its end but keeps on blooming somehow. I think it is really too hot for it, but it isn’t in direct sun too long during the day as it is under the eaves a bit.
Number 2, landscape - a little different view from the porch. At the beginning of summer this tree didn’t get leaves for a long time. We thought it was dead as it has vines all over. We were wrong. It is a big tree, too.
I also bought a Flip-Sketch sketchbook by Global Art Materials in Kansas City, made in USA. 6 x 9 inches. It has soft covers that cover the paper and a board in the back. Seems to be good for travel. The paper seems nice. I added a sticker, not sure where that came from!
I promised that I would put up some photos of my new studio, too. I made a page for that. Click here or on the tab at the top of my blog. I will leave the photos on that page.

It is nice to "see" you in action. I don't kow if I would like to do encaustics. I think the odors would get to me. lol But I do like the effects of them.
Joan, thanks. Encaustics would definitely be an outdoor experience for me, too. It was fun to see, but to get a beautiful painting would take lots of time and careful heating/warming of the painting. Practice, too. Definitely not on paper. Ha. Remember the oil paints that were set by heating. Maybe sort of the same principal. Hmmm.
Hi Jo,
This is wonderful! I have a little watercolor set similar to yours. It's so handy for traveling! If you're going through Wyoming this summer, we'd love to have you "stop by". We have plenty of room for weary travelers.
Hi Ginny, Thanks for stopping by. I think we might be going through Casper. I will keep in touch and we will stop for coffee or lunch or something!
Jo - I love the petunia sketch! Hope you will use colored pencil more?
Regina, thanks for stopping by. Colored pencil is OK for these quick sketches. I get bored when it takes too long for coloring!
