Salsa Fixin's, Pastel Painting and More

Most of you know that I really love painting in red, with red, I do love red.  I bought some tomatoes and the fixings for salsa the day I went to paint with Regina.  Did I tell you this already?  Remember I am old.  Ha.

I finished the painting.  I did not do an under painting as per usual.  The Pastelbord was dark, gray as I recall.  I tried to work very lightly with the beginning pastels.  I work all over the painting to start so I have an idea how the colors work together.  I have painted peppers and tomatoes quite a bit and usually end up with about the same background.  A dark yellow/gold.

Beginners are usually surprised at how many colors are in tomatoes or apples.  There is very little "tomato red" or "apple red".  I see yellow, orange, green.  There was not too much green in this bunch attached with the vine.  White for the garlic is interesting as well.  I never use white white.  White is yellow in warm light and blue and purple in the shadows. Very interesting to paint.

I usually use the Helen Van Wyk method of 5 tones. She was a great colorist and teacher on PBS.   The items base color, the shadow, the cast shadow, the highlight and the reflection.  She would use the complementary color in the highlight, so the highlights on the red tomatoes are light green not white.  She would put the complementary in the shadow as well.  With pastels, you can scumble one color over the other as opposed to mixing it in in oil paint.

I hope you like the results.

Salsa Fixin's, Pastel on Pastelbord, 12 x 6 inches, unframed but against museum glass.  $125

My paintings are for sale on my website, Jo's Notions Blog or now on Daily Paintworks.  I will need to keep painting to keep new work on the Daily Paintwork site.  It works pretty easily.  Have a look, you can click on the link on the right, too.  It will lead you to many other artists.  You might find something you can't live without.  If you do, tell them you found them from my blog.  : )  Hopefully some new exposure will be good for me.  Another incentive to paint every day.

I like that painting. I hope the new site works out. I took a quick look and there are lots of nice paintings available. Pretty cool.

Hi, Joanna, Daily Paintworks has many active artists. May inspire me to paint more. It is like the lottery .. You can't win if you don't play! Someone different may see my work that hasn't before. Thanks for the compliment on the painting.

Your simple subject matter always impresses me. I often struggle with ideas to paint, but you take something simple and make it a great painting.

Bag Blog, thank you so much. It helps if the simple objects are red. Ha.
