Surprise! I tried a new medium. I bought a Sharpie Liquid Pencil to try for sketching. I thought it might be good in my purse for an occasional crossword, but it does not write well. It is OK for sketching but leaves little bits of graphite scattered around as you see in my sketches. A bit messy for my taste. A change is always good. A new feel makes you/me think a little and slow down my process.
In my particular case, slow is not always better. I tend to get bored and lose interest if a drawing or painting takes too long. I'm pretty sure I could never do photo realism in paintings for that reason. One artist I saw in The Artist's Magazine many years ago, took about 150 photos to get the perfect photo for a watercolor painting. That was before digital photos! Then she painted several months on one painting. Yikes! I would be pulling my hair out.
But, if you do take time with your work that is OK with me. Some people like to work with colored pencils so that they can "color". They go over and over parts of their work to get deep colors. Therapeutic they say. For me it is nerve wracking.
Back to the sketches, I sketched in the brown paper sketchbook which is a Utrecht book, hard cover spiral, 9 x 12 inch paper. I used the new Sharpie Liquid Pencil. I sketch freehand as quickly as possible.
EP from British Columbia made the list. The last time she prepared the list all the words started with E. This time they all start with P. The list is 26 items and we have 9 days to sketch, post and comment in any order or as many as you like. If you need something to get you jump started in your sketching come on over to the Scavenger Hunts on wetcanvas.com We are on Hunt number 269. Whew!
Item number 1, pamper - these two little grand-dogs are about as spoiled and pampered as you get. Here they are on the rug by my computer in the studio. Usually they take over my ottoman. Maybe that is why I didn't sketch much while they were here. Didn't have my feet up!
All sketches are from life and if you don't find an object you can substitute something you find in your area. This is a stretch for number 2, cat. You will not find any cats in my world, not even a figurine or photo. So Nala, occupying the couch will do. She is a bit cat-like in her manner.
I am an artist that paints in pastels, with some oils, and acrylics. I sketch in pen and ink. As an artist my original paintings are influenced from living in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Bolivia, Peru and Chile, and travels throughout much of Canada and all our fifty States. This is my spot for posting paintings and sketches, to muse mostly about art, life and a little about UT Baseball.
