Revisiting Pastel Paintings

There are times when paintings should be revisited.  I find there are several things to do to decide if a painting is finished.  I like to take a photo and put it in Photoshop Elements and turn it to black and white to see how my values and contrast hold up.  It is good to look at a painting upside down and/or in a mirror.

I also have some of my critique buddies like Regina, Jennie and Joanna look at it.  They are all honest with me about their opinions.  Gene is a good critic, too.  He likes very realistic paintings and doesn't like some of the paintings I like.

I painted a couple of new paintings for the Austin Pastel Society Annual Juried Members Show.  I painted them quickly and was without any time to let them sit with the deadline looming and the fact that I just haven't been painting.

This painting was not accepted and I was pleased about that.  Why, you might ask?  The minute I sent the photo off on the last day before entries would not be accepted, I realized I was not pleased with the shadows on the rock walkway.  If they had accepted the painting, I would have had to frame it as it was.  Because it was not accepted, I could "fix" it and Gene can now frame it.

This is the painting.  I'm still not happy with the upper shadow, so am making that lighter.  It draws your attention away from the door, which by the way is not perpendicular.  I am adjusting that also.

I also changed True Blues.  I "finished" this painting and posted here.  But after it settled on my resting table for a few days, I decided it needed some red, so I added some paintbrush wildflowers to it.  I hope you like the change.

Gene will be framing these up this week.  We will deliver Breakfast View to the Austin Pastel show on Sunday, information on the sidebar.

True Blues and La Puerta Azul will be in Killeen Texas at the Convention Center in the show with Regina Burchett during the month of March.  More info on the exact dates later.

Thank you, Joanna. I bought a nice frame, gold and am not to happy with it, but we had to put it up that way. See how it goes.
