Sunflowers in Pastel, Varnish note and Photos

I painted an 8 x 10 pastel painting of sunflowers yesterday and the evening before.  Sunflowers always seem to have smiling faces to me.

Sunny Disposition, Pastel on Pastelbord, 10 x 8 inches.
I painted this from reference photos I took some time ago.

I painted sunflowers once before and enjoyed that.  Sue Modrak and I painted sunflowers with Regina Burchett at her studio a while back .. like two years??  It is fun to see how three artists painted from the same set up and have three completely different paintings at the end.  I just remembered there were some sunflowers in my studio blooms painting as well.

The painting, of the studio blooms had a problem. I painted that in oils and decided to try varnishing it with acrylic varnish ( A no-no, we are told that you can paint oils over acrylics but not vice versa but I thought I would try the varnish.) so I could see what happens.  Well, after some time, maybe a couple of months, I noticed that the varnish is cracked.  I haven't tried to take the varnish off to see if the painting is ruined.  Maybe I will get to that this summer.  Here are some close ups to compare:

The painting when first finished.

A close up of the cracks.

Another cracked area.
The texture is actually kind of neat, but who knows if the paint will start flaking off?  Could be.

We played golf this morning with son, Larry.  That is always fun.  He can hit the ball a mile!  He hadn't played for a year and still made some of the most amazing shots and of course, had the best score.  We rode carts because we were going to play 18 holes.  Lazy bums.  We thought it would be very busy today, but it wasn't bad.  The road runner was out again, too.

One of the friendly roadrunners.

Remember our veterans tomorrow for Memorial Day, or today by the time you read this.  We have so much to thank them for.  Because of them we are free to celebrate this weekend.  Hope it is good for all of you, too.  Gene will put the flag out at half staff until noon and then raise it to full staff  for the rest of the day per the protocol for displaying the flag.

I like to paint sunflowers too. They have such great color. Sorry about the varnish, but an interesting lesson.

Love the sunflowers...and the roadrunner.

Bag Blog, it is fun to paint the sunflowers. I just had to try the varnish on something that was not "precious" to me. Ha.

Thank you, Joanna. The roadrunner/runners are many at the golf course right now. We didn't see the rooster from a few years ago. Maybe someone had chicken soup.

Hey, Johanne! Thanks. I will leave the cracked one in my studio as a reminder of what not to do! It is cheery. :-)
