Gene brought me some pears to paint the other day. I was just about finished with the painting when he remembered seeing some prickly pear cacti around the corner and went to find me some additional "pears" to paint. I thought of adding them to that painting, in fact I put one in, but it changed the composition and feel of the other pears. (I will post that soon. I took some video and want to make a video and post that. That takes time as you may know.)
In the meantime, here are the cactus pears.

They are good to eat. Somewhat like a kiwi inside. I've mentioned before that we would find them when riding horseback and rub the needles off with gloves and eat them for the juice. I still got a sticker in my finger when I was setting them up to paint even though Gene had rubbed them off, I thought. I think I will go have a snack on them now, yummm.

And a photo of a typical Prickly Pear Cactus in bloom.

Wonderful Jo, love the blue rimmed bowl too. I have never tasted a prickly pear, didn't even know you could eat them.
Great title and wonderful job on the prickly pears. You've captured their unique color and shape perfectly.
Hi Barbara, thank you. The thick pottery is from Peru. The pears in South America are huge, we would slice them and serve for dessert.
Sheila, thank you so much. :)
Hmmm... the prickly pears sound delish! Will have to look for them next time I'm in a large (i.e. "big city") supermarket!
I've never eaten "pears" but the painting is great - love the colors.
Teresa, hope you find some. I'm sure the stickers will be gone in a grocery. :)
Bag Blog, thank you. People make jelly out of them, too.
I love the color in this!!! I've never tasted them...I prefer to see them in bloom!
Joan, they are beautiful to see. Thanks.
I love prickly pear fruit Jo, I first had them in Greece where they eat them all the time.. Yum.
Loved this painting too, great fun to read your blog, ALWAYS.

Very interesting, Jo. Good painting and fun facts, too. What does the juice taste like?
Rae, they are good. I cut mine open last night and they were not ripe enough. Sad. Thanks for stopping by.
Karen, thank you. It has its own taste, not strong though. Nice.
Jo: Just beautiful and the cactus photo is wonderful.
Fishing Guy, thanks. The photo is from this summer in New Mexico, north of Taos.
You haven't convinced me to try these (I know you think jalapenos are no big deal...), but I just love the painting!! Great shadows, very subtle - lovely!
Regina, you made me laugh. The pears are fruit, just stickers on the outside. Inside when ripe are a little like a kiwi with lots of seeds in the middle and the fruit around that. These weren't ready to eat yet. Thanks on the painting, I like purple, should so some eggplant I guess.
