Gene and I have a great time golfing. We aren't very good and do not work at getting better, but we have fun and walk nine holes, two or three times a week. When we are away from home we usually ride in a cart and play at eighteen holes to get some walking time.
We were out yesterday and saw Esther Wright golfing with the Senior group. She is amazing. Ninety two years old and still plays several times a week.
We met Esther and her late husband, Fred, when we moved to Bastrop. This was about twelve years ago. We played with them one day as the course was pretty busy. Fred was telling us that he played with right handed clubs for twenty five years and switched when they started making left handed clubs. They also used a 1934 Ford for their golf cart! The course then had only nine holes. They made it eighteen about the time we moved here. They could both easily, very easily, beat us at golf and won regularly with the Seniors. We still see Esther's name in the paper occasionally for closest to hole, or low score. A few years ago Fred was so proud, he had made his first hole in one, I think he was about ninety one or two at the time. Isn't that great? I hope that if I am around at Esther's age I will still be following the little white ball around.
I am an artist that paints in pastels, with some oils, and acrylics. I sketch in pen and ink. As an artist my original paintings are influenced from living in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Bolivia, Peru and Chile, and travels throughout much of Canada and all our fifty States. This is my spot for posting paintings and sketches, to muse mostly about art, life and a little about UT Baseball.

I never could see the point in hitting a ball and then having to go find it. At least in baseball, someone else goes after it. lol
Jo: What a neat story to share about the couple. It just shows you that two of my hobbies you can do late in life, golf and fishing of course. I'm glad you are getting out and I hope to do it soon.
I love your story of Esther and her husband. When I first joined the Art Guild here, there was an older lady named Ozete. She was a wonderful artist and enjoyable person - she just had a twinkle in her eye and was always willing to share her knowledge. She told me how she went back to college at 65 after raising her children and her husband had died and took art classes. One day she told me that she had participated in a five generation photo - and she was the oldest generation - in her 90's. I told her she was my hero.
Jeanne, Ha. I had never thought of that, good point! We play mostly to walk around outside and we made the deal not to argue and tell each other how to play, and that has been good!
Fishing guy, hope you get to go out soon. You still have snow, right?
Bag Blog, that is so cool. Gene's mom is 92 also and lived alone until she was 90 doing all her upkeep at home. Painting cabinets, putting down carpet, cleaning the yard, etc. Also a whiz at hand work, crafts, etc. Amazing. She still makes a rosary every day and walks as much as she can. She is in assisted living in Albuquerque.
Jo, this is a great story about Esther and Fred. Golf seems to me to be a horribly wicked sport...I have played only once, I hit a hole in one. That just seems brutally unfair that some people play for a lifetime and never get that (or don't get it until their 90s.)
I have never played again, I'll never have another round like that, why should I play? :D
Rose, Amazing! Just shows that a good bit of luck involved! Or you should have gone on to make big bucks!
I have had two holes in one. On the same hole in Austin, about a month apart. Both days I was feeling bad and told Gene, "I'm going to hit this ball one more time and then quit!"
You just never know!
How great to have a sport you can enjoy your whole life. Hmm - is chocolate a sport? Your post name got me thinking about "we can golf until..." - the cows come home? ..the grass grows too high?
Chocolate as a sport, hmmm, how delicious? Interesting endings for "we can golf until...."
