Tree in Gouache

Joanna gave me a new set of goauche paints.  I've been wanting to try them as they are the in tools to use for plein air painting.  You can have a small kit and only carry a small sketchbook and the colors with a brush and water.  Pastels are heavy and oils are wet.  Acrylics are OK but different.  

The set I got is in pans like watercolors so not easy to get the opaque look I was after.  I did have white in a tube which is more the consistency of oil paint or acrylic.  I ended up painting more like watercolor and then adding a bit of texture and opaque color using the white.    The finished sketch  when dry feels a bit waxy ?? and has some texture unlike watercolor.  

I always thought of gouache as glorified poster paint and that is what it seems to me.  I do see beautiful paintings done with it online so will watch some videos.  I will need to practice .. always something to learn.

Number 1 tree - Gouache, ink from a Micron 02 that fizzled out and is now in the trash.  In the large Canson Mixed Media sketchbook, half page.  I sketched on my footstool in the living room looking out the window while we visited.  Cody (nephew), Joanna, Gene and I.  Cody was visiting from Arizona.  So nice to see him and catch up.

Open Multiple Things Sketch

This beautiful morning found us out by the east lake or pond (as it is drying up).  It was a lovely morning for a very hot day to come.  I sat on the bench and sketched in the small Ohuhu sketchbook.  I took my sketchbook, pen and watercolors.  I failed to take the water brushes however and did ink sketches.  I added watercolors to the first sketch back at the house.  I liked the sketch  better before color so left the second without color.  That is the fire station in the background.

I found a recipe for Rice Krispie squares, titled "Grammie's Rice Krispies Squares".  They have peanut butter, chocolate and butterscotch.  I will get the ingredients and try them.  I like easy gluten free sweets when I have sweets.  I will report back and share the recipe ... if it is good. 

 

 

Ceramic and Wood Sketch

As usual, sketched on the porch.  I put my models on the arm of the wooden glider and sat there.  While sketching we listened to the birds and watched the people walking.  Not too many folks today for some reason.  Person(s) is on the list, so I was hoping to see more.

Sketched on the bottom of the page from the last sketch in the Fixsmith 9 x 12 inch sketchbook with a Micron 02 and colored pencil.  

I do not enjoy coloring with colored pencil.  There should be at least two more layers of color to get close to the colors of the items.  It takes time to do that.  My painting buddy, Regina Burchett, says coloring is therapeutic.  Not in my world, it makes me crazy.  I prefer the old pastels.

I had avocado on rice cake.  An attempt to be like avocado toast.  The avocado was not nearly ripe enough so I had hard slices to chew on!  It was still good but not great.  If it had been ripe I would have had a hard time finishing the sketch before eating the snack.

 

 

Bricks Glass Sketch

We have been able to sit on the porch a bit in the mornings.  It is pretty warm but with a fan and just sitting there it is OK.  We were listening to birds with an app called Merlin.  It listens and identifies the birds.  There were about 10 this morning.  It doesn't recognize the local rooster.  That was a surprise.

I got out my new sketchbook.  It is a FIXSMITH 9 x 12 inch plain paper sketchbook.  I've been sketching with ink in the watercolor sketchbooks and that is sort of a waste.  If I want color on this paper it will be with colored pencil.

Our Scavenger Hunt from Life list https://creativespark.art/threads/scavenger-hunt-from-life-194-jul-7-jul-19.9140/ had brick and glass as a couple of the items.  There it was, the lamp on the wall of the porch.  I thought I was being careful with perspective and got a line wrong and that messes up the whole thing.  You can see, I hope, that it is metal and glass on the red brick wall.

We are doing OK.  Gene is slowly recovering his strength and that helps a lot.  We won't be traveling or anything like that but we are hanging in there.

Food Trucks Bastrop Sketch

Today was my day out.  I went to lunch with my friend, Susan, at Anita's.  Such a nice lunch.  I had a non alcoholic margarita, asked for lemonade and she asked it I wanted frozen.  Sure I replied and she brought a mason jar of "lemonade".  It tasted just like a margarita so maybe I got margarita mix.  It was delicious.  Must have had 800 calories, but worth it.  I ate a Puffy Taco.  I like those a lot.

After lunch I went over to the food truck plaza so I could sketch in the shade.  I had a latte and sketched for about an hour.  Then got some carnitas at El Fercho to take home for Gene.   I asked what Fercho meant and the waitress said it was a nickname for the owner Fernando.  Hmmm.  They have pretty good food their.  The carnitas was more like shredded pork like we put in tamales.  Usually carnitas are fried pork.  It was good.  I will add some red New Mexico chile for the leftovers.  Pep it up a little.

Sketched in the older Ohuhu Mix Media sketchbook with Ohuhu pens and watercolors.  I put in the red letters with a Prismacolor pen when I got home.

I sketched toward the Moosebelly BBQ trailer (I wrote Mooseberry on the truck, guess I was thinking about the blueberries in their BBQ sauce.) and the Thai food trailer.  Neither was open.  Tuesday is probably a slow day.  The latte trailer shut down shortly after I got mine.  I guess they stay open only until lunch time.  The stage with the bench is wired with electricity and has small speakers up.  It is new to me.  It is about 20 x 12 feet, my perspective is off.  I added it after I did the trailers.  It should have been in first.  The back of the Moosebelly trailer is a screened in section and the think sticking out of the orange Thai truck is actually a blue pickup in the parking lot.  There were more flowers but I had been sketching about 45 minutes and needed to leave so quickly added the color.  

Gene had speech therapy and stayed with Pam, caregiver.   He also rode his stationary bike today.  Pretty busy, too.

Strange not to have a baseball game tonight.  Longhorns have one more regular season series with Missouri on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.  After that there will be the conference tournament.  After that the Road to Omaha starts with Regionals, Super Regionals and the College World Series.  We shall see how the Horns do.  They have played well, only losing 12 of their 49 games.  One game was rained out.  Hook 'em Horns!  You can get more info here https://texaslonghorns.com/sports/baseball/

 

Fire Hydrant Watercolor

Yesterday was my day out.  I met Joanna and spent time with her so didn't sketch much.  I did stop by the fire hydrant in front of the Super 8 on the way to meet her.  It was good to have a daughter and mom time.

Number 5 fire hydrant - sketched with pencil in the Ohuhu Mixed Media sketchbook and added color at home.  I didn't take a photo.  The hydrant was so rusty that I couldn't tell the color.  I guess it may not have been painted like the one at the juice place I sketched a few weeks ago.   I wondered about them leaving the hydrants unpainted.  

It was a nice day.  A bit windy.  The Longhorns baseball team played Texas State in Austin.  Horns won for the first time in a few years.  They have been playing two Tuesday games every season, playing one in San Marcos and one in Austin.  Horns have been winning in San Marcos and then the Bobcats have been winning in Austin.  So the streak was broken.  Horns won both games this season.  

Red Sketch

I bet you would expect some apples for my red item.  Apples are always my fall back subject.  Ketchup was on the last Hunt and I wanted to try it with markers but never got it done.  So, I put "red" on this list so I could try my hand at sketching with the markers in the new Marker sketchbook.

Markers really don't blend so you need many colors if you are planning to be very realistic or atmospheric.  I still prefer Pastels for that.  These markers are fun for a quick splash of color.

Sketching Plants and Remembering Pastel Techniques

Today was sketch day during Gene's PT.  It was cold this morning but warmed up to about 55º by 11:15 am or so when I was sketching.  I did sit in the car for comfort.  The cacti is by the entrance to the shopping area.  I hadn't really noticed them before.  The intersection is pretty busy turning off the frontage road to the mall.  Today there was no traffic.  The plants are well tended and look  very nice.

In the class with Enid Wood we were talking about developing texture with pastels.  I remembered the class I had with Tom Christopher in Arkansas.  I went with my art buddy Lou Baggett.  She, Toby, Gene and I shared a house for the workshop.  We had a great time and learned a lot.  David and Lisa came too for the visiting part.  (You can put Tom Christopher in the search box at the top of my home page and see about the workshop and his techniques.

I did this painting using his stumbling technique to build texture.  I like it and his use of color.  Good memories.

While looking for a good link to Tom, I rediscovered the videos on the website of the New Mexico Pastel Society.  They have a large collection of videos by some of my favorite artists that have given demos there.  They include demos by Enid Wood, Tom Christopher, Natasha Isenhour, Karen Margulis, Desmond O'Hagan, Michael Chesley Johnson, Doug Dawson and more that I haven't seen in person.  You should check it out and I will do the same.  I might discover some new favorites.

I laughed today.  The "kids" and I still do Wordle, Wurdle and other word puzzles.  Today the 6 letter word in one of them was sketch.  You get 6 tries to get the word.  On my 5th try I had the S and the T in the right position and had the E in the wrong position.  I stared at it for the longest time and tried so many ideas in my head and on the iPad.  When I saw it,  I couldn't believe that word hadn't come to mind after seeing and talking about it every day for the Hunts and just sketching.  Crazy.  Maybe that is why I like puzzles.  

Small Machine Hand iPad Sketch

I decided to sketch in my chair at the footstool.  I had a sketchbook but no pen or watercolors handy.  Oh, there was my iPad for sketching and in color.  I used the App, Brushes, and my finger to start, then remembered the pencil was right there as well.

Number 1 - small machine.  A new pencil sharpener that Joanna gave me at Christmas.  It is an ooly, Mighty  Sharpener.  Seems good so far.
Number 2 - hand

We have been doing OK.  Slower at everything we do and because it takes longer to do things we stay busy!  

Gasoline has been going down.  We paid $2.099 yesterday at Buc-ee's.  Joanna paid under $2 at the H.E.B. in Manor on the weekend.  Wow.  We should be traveling.

Kazoo or Not Sketch

I do not have a Kazoo so substituted these whistle/flutes from Bolivia or Peru.  They went through the fire so have lost their colorful designs.  You can still see a bit of the white and a darker siena color in places.  They have blackish marks as well.

Number 4 kazoo - not a kazoo.  This is in the large Canson Mixed Media sketchbook with a Micron 02 pen.  The dark shadows on the paper is because I took a photo and the wrinkles have shadows.  Actually not bad on the flutes as it looks like the burned places.  

The sunset from last night.  We haven't had clouds so the sunsets haven't been much.  Today is very cloudy, but no rain expected.  Dang.  And we won't have a good sunset either.  :-(

Doodad Sketch

I sketched on my iPad with the App, Brushes.  I wanted color but was not interested in bringing watercolors to the living room and we were watching TV.  So my footstool was table.  Not sure why I used my fingers and didn't use the pencil for the lines.  Just my sketching mind so not very even lines.

Number 1 doodad - a thing Gene got for Christmas from Joanna.  Seems to have been made on a 3D Printer.  It can be pushed into a few shapes but does not come apart.  Sort of like a Rubic's cube in that way.  Pretty colors!

We are having a couple of days of winter.  High today was 45º and expect the same tomorrow.  The wind blew hard and made the "feel like" temp in the 20s.  Brrr.  Happy it is only for a couple of days.  We should be back in the 70s for the weekend.  Crazy.

It was a good day for the leftover posole.  That is a soup made of the hominy that has been cured with lime, pork, red chile and spices of oregano and garlic.  We added beans and more chile.  I ate mine with saltines and Gene had flour tortillas.  Sooo good in cold weather.  Some folks add grated radishes on top and a squeeze of fresh lemon or lime.

I decided I better get with it and sketch something else for the Hunt.  It is almost over and I host the next one.

We have a bit of fall color now that it is winter.  Foggy this morning.

 

Fast Moving Sketch

I was on the porch and wanted to sketch the clouds in color so got the handy iPad.  The clouds were zooming by.  I used the app, Brushes, and my fingers.  Probably took about 20 minutes.

Wooly Pastel Sketch

I finally found about an hour to sketch.  About 20 minutes at a time.  Much better than not playing in the dust.

Number 5 wooly - little stuffed dog.  A gift from Gene on some past holiday.  It is sketched on dark gray MiTientes paper with an assortment of pastels.  Yikes they are so dirty.  I notice that in the photo.  I also see that I lost the rusty color with my yellowish highlights.  Guess that is from working in spurts.  Once I get the idea down I paint/sketch from what the painting needs not what I see.  I'm pretty sure there is a dog more that color in the bedroom on the headboard.  Lots of toys there.

 

Public Space Sketch

 It was an absolutely glorious day today.  About 80º F when I was sketching.  I sat on the pillar support and sketched while Gene was in PT.

Number 4 public space - I sketched in the Ohuhu sketchbook with an Ohuhu .5 pen and watercolors.  I was pleased with the cars for the most part.  I'm not usually too happy with my cars as they don't resemble the actual vehicle.  I like the first, second and fourth, left to right.  The third car ended up looking like a "kit" car or revamped in some way with the tire so large.  I also didn't color the passenger side tire .. maybe it was flat and colorless.  Yeah, right.  It was a very low slung sedan in silver and quite a lovely little car.   Always a surprise when you don't see things until you add color.

Joan Tavolott mentioned that she always tries to sketch what will be moving out of her sketch first.  Great idea.  I decided I better sketch the cars before someone parked in front of me or  the cars moved.  No one parked until I was just finishing the last and then they only stayed about 5 minutes and came and moved.  The parked sketch models stayed.  Thanks, Joan.

Tree and Lamp Post Watercolor & Ink

 It was a beautiful day for sketching outside, about 82 degrees.  While Gene was in PT I sat in the comfort of my mobile studio with the windows open and enjoyed the 45 minutes or so...

I intended to see the red umbrella up and shaking in the breeze but it had collapsed in the 2 or so inches of much needed rain we got over the weekend.  No one had picked it up by 11:45 am when I finished my sketch.  It still added some color to my sketch. 

Oak Leaf Fun

It was physical therapy day for Gene and a little warm to sketch outside.  I picked up a leaf on the way in.  Pretty sure it was an oak leaf as that was on the Hunt list.  There are several kinds of oaks in this area so not sure which oak it is.

I sketched in the Canson travel sketchbook which has regular paper so no color.  The leaf was brown and lighter on the bottom side than the top. It was about 4 or 5 inches long, so a good size to sketch.  I sketched with a Micron 02 so a bit finer line which worked well for this sketch.

I didn't mention that I had my outgoing email shut off for a day.  Something weird on the email I sent of the sketch of the tree silhouette several posts back.  So weird.  Joanna came and worked on the problem for me.  We first thought it was the Apple mail, but turned out it was the server.  We re-installed the accounts several times.   The server said "abusive pattern detected".  My AOL account goes through my server too, so both outgoing emails were affected.  My Fine Art Studio, web page hosts, figured it out, contacted the server and they turned my mail back on.  Once Joanna and FASO figured it out it was fixed quickly.  Hmmmm.

I have my blog separately on Blogger (Google) just because I've had it there forever, well since 2006.  I used to do my own website Adobe software I had purchased but it went on-line so I would pay monthly so I went to FASO it is so easy to use.  No more dealing with the codes.  

Tractors and Margaritas Sketches

It was my day off yesterday.  I went to town.  First to get a latte and then to find a sketching place.  It was about noon so I looked for shade!  I was headed to Fisherman's Park when I saw a big tractor being parked and a lovely big oak tree to shade my car.  I was intent on the back hoe/tractor and trailer and didn't put in the stop sign.  That would have added color.  The guys parked and walked toward downtown a couple of blocks away for lunch I guess.  It was gone when I came back later.

From there I headed on down to the park and went under the pavilion.  Not anyone around but the grackles and squirrels.  Mess all over the tables and unpleasant so I didn't stay long.  From there I sought a place where I could have a snack and sketch.  The Guadalajara came to mind.  They are always so nice there.  Sort of like "everybody knows your name" as they greet you like they know you.  You get multiple waiters and it reminds me of South America.

 

Number 7 - part of your breakfast, subbing my lunch snack of guacamole, salsa, chips and a margarita.  In the same sketchbook, a full page.

It was interesting.  There were two couples across the room and not anyone else in sight but other diners in booths and tables behind me.  As the couples left, they stopped by to tell me that they saw me eating alone so bought my lunch.  Guess they felt sorry for the "old" lady.  Ha.  Anyway, it was nice.  I bought a flan to bring home to share with Gene and give a bit more tip to the staff.  

So it was a good day out and Gene and his caretaker, Virginia, did well.

Colorful Person

Actually it is colorful and person.  Two items on the new Hunt.  I sketched at the dentist's office.  I started the person and just about had his head done when they called me back.  I had to finish him from memory.  I'm not sure where his feet were but they were crossed and it was interesting.  

I used the windows from the room I was in.  There are 3 stained glass windows.  I just finished the middle one.  The main glass is rough and clear so looks sort of gray and then the bright colors.  The office has beautiful adornments.  I think the benches are from the train station which is what the building was.  Completely rebuilt.  There are stained glass windows in the front main office as well.  Similar.

I used a Micron 03 in the small Strathmore sketchbook and added the color at home.

And the windows.  There are shaded on the bottom windows which were pulled down as the sun was coming in.

I'm finished with the dentist for a while.  They put some bone filler where they pulled my tooth the other day and now I have to decide about an implant or  a partial.  Thinking about that.  Implants are so expensive and the result will be months away.  Hmmmm.

A good friend is in the hospital.  Pray for our friend, Alexis, and her family.  Thank you.

Metal Maze

I attempted to sketch the ceiling and crosspieces at PT Solutions today.  I got lost in the lines looking up.  I spent about 30 minutes on it.  That is long for a 6 x 8 inches or so sketch.  It is in the Canson sketchbook with plain paper.  I used a Micron 03 pen.

 

Number 8 metal - the ceiling and cross pieces are painted white.  The back wall is a royal blue and the big pipe and A/C is aluminum color.  I left out many of the sections.
