Southwest Challenge Watercolor

The November Challenge on wetcanvas in the Southwest Forum is almost over.  I thought I should have an entry.  I don't like painting from photos and this was no exception.   The photo was taken with a flash it looks like with no good shadows, etc.  Also artificial flowers.  My other choices was a fall landscape with water, similar to our ponds, scarecrow and pumpkins, pumpkin and vase or a seashell.  Fall colors are not me. Hoping for more southwest type photos for December.   It is the challenge though, so here you are then.

Challenge is about 8 x 10 inches on Canson watercolor paper, 140 lb.  The paper is not great.  I think the paper in the Canson Mix Media sketchbook is better paper.  I have a pad of the watercolor paper, so used it for this.  The pad is 30 sheets, 11 x 15 inches.  I should donate it and use better paper.

Now I need to do some homework for my watercolor class on Wednesday.  And maybe a sketch for the Scavenger Hunt.

  3. I use the Canson paper for my students. It works well enough for them or for my little cards I send out. I have bought Master's Touch from Hobby Lobby and it is SO bad that Canson seems great. Your flowers and vase are nice. I like the way you caught the light on the vase and glass.

  4. Thanks, Bag Blog. I have a block of Arches paper that I've had for years. It is sure better, but twice the cost at least. I'm not too disappointed with the painting, just the photo it was from. The challenge is to use the photo someway, but it is hard to make up light on glass and metal so used the photo reference. "Maybe" it would have been better from life.

  5. BTW, an artist that comments by e-mail said this: " it looks to me like the
white flower arching for the wine glass imbibed... see the white "flower print" evidence it left in the
center of the wine in the glass??? ;+) "

    This made me smile....
