Green sketch ... what?

I failed to mention in the previous post that for some of us it also difficult to paint green, that is a landscape for example.  I found this true around Angel Fire.  Green trees, green grass, green, green,......  And green is another color that I don't find exciting .. unless it's money.

There are a couple of tricks or ideas that help with green landscapes.  Richard McKinley is for putting purple around the edge of trees, shadows or in the sky.  Another instructor, maybe Bob Rohm ?,  said there is always red in pine trees.  Enid Wood says that orange in trees makes them more natural.  I have tried the above and it works every time!

My sketch today is green and I did not use any of those ideas.  Well, it isn't a tree.  I can see now that the lizard might have looked a bit more real and less "cartoonish" with some of the orange in the darks and some purple in the shadow or background.

Interesting to think about...

Number 7, insect - substituting a lizard.  We sat on the porch to have our coffee this morning and a tiny lizard crawling on the screen kept us company for about 20 minutes, then scampered away.  The lizard was on the outside of the screen.  There was some shadow on the screen.  Sketched on my iPad with the Apple Pencil and the Brushes app.  An interesting note, cursive writing is easier than printing with the pencil.  There is a slight lag when you move the pencil.  Printing has more "stops and starts" than cursive, so that may be the reason.  Hmmm.

Always more questions than answers and always learning something.  Too bad we always forget some things, too.  And, more so as I'm aging.  Another hmmmm.

  1. I like your hints for painting green. There are often colors hidden in the greens. Cute lizard...not a creature I see here very often.

  2. Joan, happy to share the hints. When I paint a lot it comes easier, since I haven't been painting it takes thinking for color.
We have lots of lizards. We have a dusk to dawn light by the garage and so lots of them there. At night they feast on the flying bugs.

  3. aww cute green lizard :)

things in nature are usually never just green, might look it, but usually have other colours to, so those are good tips :)

  4. Jennifer Rose, thanks. :) I also find that mixing green from different blues and yellows is usually more natural than the tube green colors.
