I use a mixture of any pastels on hand. I usually start with Nupastel for the sketch and initial block in and then go to the softer brands. Rembrandt, Daler-Rowney, etc., with Ludwig and Unison for the darks. I guess the dark off to the left is the bank and the tree is beside or behind the bank. I couldn't lighten the photo enough to tell.
