Another Scavenger Sketch

Wetcanvas.com is working again so here is another sketch for Scavenger Hunt 85. Number 2, a handle. I sketched the handles on a large basket from Bolivia. This was about 15 minutes with a Micron 005 pen.

The handles are not any different in size in real life. I will blame my bad perspective on looking over my shoulder to the right, it is behind Gene's chair, and watching TV. I should be too embarrassed to post it, but what the hey. This is an exercise to learn and practice.

I have been working on a commission of an entrance gate and will post it when I have approval from the client. I'm painting it in acrylics and so far, it is coming along well. I should finish soon.

Some Art is Selling

Oh my! Southeby's had a great auction last week. This triptych by Frances Bacon sold for a mere $86 million. (Photo from the NY Times Article, their art blog is here.) Most of the sales were abstract and pop art. No recession in the big art world. Sigh.......

wetcanvas.com, AWOL (sketch)

wetcanvas.com is absent without leave. They are refurbishing the site and trying to get it more stable with all the images and posts. Must be a big job.

I finally got a sketch done for Scavenger Hunt 85 and am unable to post there at this time. I am furnishing the link and maybe by the time you see this, the site will be operating. You can read about why I am a Scavenger Hunter in this post from last November.

In the meantime here is my sketch number 1, something that tangles, in my New York sketchbook with a Micron 005 pen. About 15 minutes.

All the cords on my computer desk. This is only the camera, the card reader, and my two laptops. You can see a DVD writer there that I don't use anymore, hmmm. In addition on the other side there is the router, modem, hard drive for backup, computer, mouse, speakers, and phone charger. How do we get by? Wow.

Giving Your Blood

Donating BLOOD saves lives!

Think about donating. It is easy and painless (well, almost) and helps so many people. We donated today before the baseball game. (The Longhorns won. Joanna will write about it later.) It takes about an hour for me to give blood. Most people can be finished in about forty minutes. Gene donated platelets today, that takes one and a half to two hours.

I went and bought some glass for my pastel paintings at Hobby Lobby and came back to pick him up. Because we were going to Austin anyway, it did not cause us any inconvenience to stop by the Blood and Tissue Center.

Think about donating some blood. Local information is here. I'm sure you can "Google" your local location.

All Fired Up .. glass and pottery show, Bastrop

All Fired Up is the name of the show at the Bastrop Fine Arts Guild Gallery for May. Markie and Lea Cundy are a pair of the featured artists. I have mentioned them on the blog before. Markie is a young fused glass artist and Lea, his mom, is a wonderful potter. Lea makes beautiful bluebonnet and Texas wildflower designs. It was fun to attend the opening last Saturday evening and visit with them and the other artists. They had some beautiful pieces, good food, good music and good times. If you are in Bastrop this month, stop by the Gallery at 1009 Main Street, downtown, and have a look.

Markie displaying one of his pieces. He makes jewelry as well.

Lea talking to Gene in the food area with some other guests.

Mike Henderson, artist, guitar player and singer, and Lea. Mike will be the featured artist at the Gallery in June.

Katherine Tyrrell, my living, working encyclopedia on art, is working on an instruction manual/book for sketch artists. This is a great post to get you started if you don't already sketch people and some great reminders and ideas if you already sit in airports, hotels, restaurants, etc., with sketchbook in hand.

Self Portrait Competition, American Artist

I have been so behind on reading and posting. I hope you portrait painters saw this and entered it. American Artist Magazine has a self portrait competition and the deadline is May 19. You still have time.

Good luck.
