Festival of Trees

We went out yesterday afternoon and helped move trees around and set up things for the Festival of Trees. We helped more in past years, but this year we are going to the show at the Bunkhouse. I donated the painting, Crafts Prairie View. You can see the painting and more information here.

Here is Gene putting the top on the tree that the Board of Directors donated. Peggy Colbert is the chair of the Festival. She is in the middle with her back to us.

The trees had been on display at the Lost Pines Resort for a few weeks and the big gala is tonight. Hope you can go support the Family Crisis Center.

Gene and I will be on the road a couple of days. I will post on our return.

Sketches for Scavenger Hunt 63

I've been sketching a little to get some art time in. Someone on the Hunt mentioned that I sketch quickly. Sometimes you can tell that more easily as you can see my perspective is out of whack. If you follow my blog, you know that I sketch with a pen and do not do any pencil lines. I try to look/see well and put it down the first time. I have convinced myself that this will help with my painting. If I can put the stroke down right the first time, I will have fewer strokes, less muddy color and an accurate description of my subject. Now I have to practice the painting part!

For Scavenger Hunt 63, #1 Big chair or sofa. Gene's recliner wit the Micron 005, 15 minutes.

#2 Wall clock. One of Gene's clocks that he got in Bolivia. It got wet on one of the moves and came apart in many, many pieces. It had been glued with something that was not waterproof. Gene put new veneer and glued it back together. Looks beautiful now. My sketch does not do it justice.

#3 Computer screen open to wetcanvas.com. This is open to Joan's sketches, she does sketching with the fewest lines of any of us and they are so good. My copy is not! Ha. She is a watercolor artist. Micron 005 pen, 20 minutes

#4 Something metal. A pewter vase from Bolivia. 20 minutes with a Micron 005 pen.

#5 Camera. My camera that replaced the one I closed in the tailgate. :) About 15 minutes with two Micron 005 pens.

You can tell on these sketches that I was not working too hard on the perspective and ellipses. So .. does it help to sketch, just to sketch? I guess any practice is good.

Happy Birthday Cole!

Happy Birthday to you,
Happy Birthday to you,
Happy Birthday dear Cole,
Happy Birthday to you.

Then.....
.... and Now

It is the twenty second birthday of our grandson, Cole. Hard to believe, wow! He is our favorite grandson and we are very proud of him. He is in his fourth year at the University of Louisville.

Info for the Collector

read more about this one here. It is at Peppers Art Gallery in Magdalena, New Mexico

I hope some of my blog readers are persons looking for art, not all artists. I try to have information for other artists in my WIP (Work in Progress) and demo posts. I think it is important to share whatever information I have learned with fellow artists.

I also think it is important for the art patrons and interested viewers to learn about art as well. They can increase their appreciation for artists and gain a greater understanding of the artwork.

There are many reasons for collecting and buying art. The main one should be that you like the piece! If you like it, it will go with anything and anywhere.

Clint Watson of FineArtStudioOnline writes a newsletter and collects information on buying and collecting art. You can sign up here. He also puts out a newsletter for artists here. He collects information from other sources so it is possible you have read part of his newsletter elsewhere.

If you would like to comment about why you buy art or have questions, let me know.

Last Two Sketches for Scavenger Hunt 62

I did a couple more sketches for Scavenger Hunt 62 and posted the start for Scavenger Hunt 63. I should have posted it last night. I just commented on 62 and went to bed. A touch of old-timers disease. I had the list ready, I've had it ready for a couple of weeks, I sent it to Jeanne Grant early, as she was having knee surgery. I have been thinking of her. Hopefully all went well and she is finishing rehab and on her way to recovery.

Sadly, I only finished nine out of the twenty-six for this Hunt. #6, 7 and 8. Something from the fridge - my favorite white wine, Doña Isadora from Chile along with a measuring cup and measuring spoons. Challenge to paint them together. I used the Micron 005 pens, black and green. About 20 -25 minutes in my sketchbook.

#9. Something you don't like to eat. This is Micron 005 pens, too. About 30 minutes. To find something I don't like to eat in this house is hard because I don't usually buy anything I don't like and as you might suspect, I like most foods. I was digging around and found this box of Jell-o. I don't like Jell-o very much and this low calorie stuff must be worse. It must have been there for a few years for one of us that was sick and couldn't eat solid food. Uuuuuu. When we were kids we used to swipe Jell-o from the cupboard and go eat it dry. I could eat it that way. :)

Belated Happy Birthday to the U. S. Marine Corps!

Here is Marine son's, David, comment from my Veterans Day post. "Thanks for thinking of the veterans Mom and Happy Birthday to all my fellow Marines. OOORAH!!"

Arghhh. I forgot this, sorry David. Below is my post from last year. It seems appropriate to repeat it! It takes a few minutes to load on high speed. Now it is 232 years. The birthday is November 10.

This is David when he came home after bootcamp, and the rest of us except Gene. Was he taking the photo?

My post from last year:

"The Marines have 231 years of service today. Happy Birthday. Here is a tribute to them. It is very long but a nice tribute to the Marines including our son. Thank you all for your service to our country.

Semper Fi"

Veteran's Day 2007

As usual I am behind the times. I am so supportive of our veterans and get lazy and don't do justice to their service. Thank goodness, they don't get lazy!

You can see what I posted last year here. Also you can see our friend Larry Burchett here in the photos on the Austin American-Statesman. It is photo #14. (I'm not sure how long this link will last) The photo is on the front page of the printed newspaper today.

Check out my links below to the Marine Corps artists and other military blogs.

Thank you, veterans for your service and our safety.

Two More Photos

Here are two more photos from the reception . Joanna took them.

A nice photo of me. I REALLY DISLIKE photos of me and this one is great as far as photos of me go!. Thank you Joanna!

This is another shot of the paintings above the telephone bank at the reception. Can you believe it? Maybe if you were 10 feet tall you could see them and who can read the cards? I'm disappointed for whichever paintings the persons that hung the show decided to put there, and even more so that they are mine and Rosie's. :( The show over all looks so nice and they did such a nice job on the reception. Joanna and I did see one lady writing down the name of my painting to vote for the Peoples' Choice, another lady was reading it for her on her tiptoes! Sigh....
